General Information

The Portland Rose Festival Dragon Boat Race is an annual cultural event hosted by the Portland-Kaohsiung Sister City Association (PKSCA) held in early June as a sanctioned event of the Portland Rose Festival Foundation. The event can include as many as 84 dragon boat teams. There are two divisions: Mixed and Women. This event is well suited for both experienced and beginning teams. Participating teams are local, national, and international.

The race is held on the Willamette River located at Tom McCall Waterfront Park in downtown Portland. The mission of the staff that conducts and manages the event is to provide the registered teams a world class race experience.

The Kaohsiung River boats used for the event are a traditional boat used in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Each crew consists of 20 paddlers, drummer, steersperson, and flag catcher. At the end of their race, the team's flag catcher must climb on top of the dragon head, stretch out between the horns, reach for a flag mounted on the top of a buoy at the finish line and pull the flag out to get the time for the team. This makes for exciting traditional finishes.

Teams are provided life vests and paddles. The paddles used are larger than standard dragon boat paddles. Teams in the Portland and Vancouver area are provided a ten-week 30-hour practice season. Out-of-town teams can take advantage of one practice session which is included in their reduced race fee.
